Malta: Hummingbird Hawk-moth

A few weeks ago while we were walking around in Sliema (where we live) we saw a weird zipping-around thing near all these flowers. We got a bit closer and tried to work out what the hell it was, with our opinions strongly divided between “hummingbird” and “some kind of moth”. I tried to take a bunch of photos, but thing was quite zippy, so it may or may not be in the (massively scaled down) photo here in this post. Anyway, it turns out that there is such a thing as a “hummingbird hawk-moth”, and that is what this little guy was. Really quite an amazing thing to see – though probably too “cold” now (it’s a chilly 16 degrees today) to see them until next Spring/Summer. Still, I like.
