Fiction: Was

Was as in I was once this.

Was as in time passed.

Was as in the past.

Was as in passed on by.

Was as in was.

I was once. Nobody knew.

Nobody knows everything.

Nobody is pulling the strings attached to the edges of the world, nobody can roll it all up in a second and walk away.

Nobody has all the answers, all the ways, nobody always was.

Still is, today.

Internally I am fine,

whereas I was broken.

Now found,

then bound.

It’s the same old story nobody knows.

We all talk in broken poetry

the better to ambiguate

dissemble

and win hearts and minds to our vague cause.

It always sounds good

nothing always has.

Ah yes, nothing.

It’s a trap

this language

a thin board

over a pit

in your stomach

as you fall

a long way

into was.

Involuntary time travel is so painful

you never quite land.
